In this video, we’re going to talk about why spinach is the worst source of iron. Now, you may have seen Popeye and his many cans of spinach and thought that spinach was a great source of strength-building iron. But, in fact, it’s a bad source of iron, and it won’t do much for you.

There are two sources of iron: heme iron and non-heme iron. Non-heme iron is found in plants—it’s not very bioavailable. Since non-heme iron has low bioavailability, this means that you won’t be able to absorb the iron found in many vegetables, like spinach.

You would need about 10x as much non-heme iron as heme iron.

Another reason why spinach (and swiss chard) is a bad source of iron is that it’s packed full of oxalates. Oxalates bind with iron, making it almost entirely non-bioavailable to you.

To make matters even worse, spinach is high in polyphenols. Polyphenols happen to block the absorption of iron as well.

You might also be wondering if beans, legumes, seeds, nuts, and grains are good sources of iron. Although they do contain iron, they also contain a lot of phytates. Phytates block the absorption of iron along with calcium and zinc.

Of course, I’m not saying you shouldn’t have spinach and other healthy vegetables. Instead, I’m suggesting that you get your iron from other food sources.

The best sources of heme iron are:
• Clams
• Liver
• Kidney and other organ meats
• Oysters
• Octopus
• Red meat
• Fish
• Eggs
