Denotation is the literal definition of a word. Connotation is the implied context associated with the word. When people say to use a different word than what has been used historically, they are probably trying to muddy the waters. For example, please use the word special rather than retarded... well, or elected official, or for today's society, WWII Freedom Fighter for Ukraine on the side of Germany... rather than Nazi. That word is actually reserved for anyone with whom we disagree.
