Lovelessly married to alcoholic prosecutor Walter O'Neil, Martha Ivers is now at the head of an industrial empire in small Iverstown (Pennsylvania), but her past was violent: eighteen years earlier, she had accidentally killed her aunt, who had stopped her of running away with Sam Masterson, a poor boy who lived on the streets. Now, Sam is back, a wanderer and a gambler, and his path crosses with that of Toni Marachek, a young woman in trouble with the police. When seeking help from Walter, he reawakens Martha's passion, which results in a spiral of jealousy, blackmail, manipulation and death.

The film was based on the short story "Love Lies Bleeding" by playwright John "Jack" Patrick. Produced by Hal B. Wallis, the film stars Barbara Stanwyck, Van Heflin, Lizabeth Scott and features Kirk Douglas in his film debut.

Robert Rossen's screenplay was based on the short story Love Lies Bleeding, by playwright John Patrick, and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Screenplay. The film was entered into the 1947 Cannes Film Festival. (https://en.wikipedia.org/)
