A lot of people want to apply for Amex credit cards and are often surprised when they get denied. To learn how to get approved for Amex cards, first study the Amex application rules. Following these rules does not guarantee an approval, rather, it may give you a higher chance of an approval.

Amex Application Rule 1: Amex 1/5 Rule
- You may get approved for 1 Amex credit card every 5 days. This does not apply to Amex charge cards, which include the: Amex Centurion Card, Amex Platinum Card, Amex Gold Card, Amex Green Card, and the Amex Plum Card.

Amex Application Rule 2: Amex 2/90 Rule
- You may get approved for 2 Amex credit cards every 90 days. This does not apply to Amex charge cards.

Amex Application Rule 3: Amex 4-5 Credit Card Rule
- This answers the question of “How many Amex cards can you have?”
- You may get approved for a maximum of 4 or 5 Amex credit cards. This does not apply to Amex charge cards.

Amex Application Rule 4: Amex 10 Charge Card Rule
- You may get approved for a maximum of 10 Amex charge cards. This applies to the: Amex Centurion, Platinum, Gold, Green, and Plum Cards.

Amex Application Rule 5: Credit Score Requirements
- This answer the question of “What credit score do you need for American Express cards?”
- Unfortunately, the Amex credit score requirements are not published and they may vary from one credit card or charge card to another. I’d personally feel good about applying with a 670 score or higher. Also note that Amex charge cards tend to be easier to get approved for than Amex credit cards.

Amex Application Rule 6: Amex Hard Inquiry vs. Amex Soft Inquiry
- Your first Amex credit card / charge card application will likely involve a hard inquiry.
- Your second (and beyond) Amex credit card / charge card application will likely involve a soft inquiry.
- NOTES: If you begin your Amex journey on the personal side, you may get another hard inquiry on your 1st business card. If you begin your Amex journey on the business side, you may get another hard inquiry on your 1st personal card.

Amex Application Rule 7: Amex Once In A Lifetime Rule | Amex Once Per Lifetime Rule
- You can get a welcome offer on each Amex card only ONCE.
- Exceptions: Amex No Lifetime Language offers, Waiting about 5+ years for Amex’s system to refresh

Amex Financial Reviews
- Amex financial reviews are not common but may occur at any time. A likely trigger is having a lot of credit from Amex, especially compared to your income. Consider an Amex credit limit decrease or closing an account before applying for a new card if you think your total lines with Amex are getting (too) high.

Amex Pop Up Window
- This is a message saying you’re not eligible for the welcome bonus. Occurs before fully submitting.
- What may cause it?
- Receiving too many Amex welcome bonuses*
- Receiving too many introductory APR offers*
- Opening too many Amex cards*
- Closing too many Amex cards*
- If you’ve had the same card in the past
- Other factors

* Within a given period of time (not publicly known).

Amex Reconsideration Line Number
- If your application goes to ‘pending’ or gets denied, consider calling the Reconsideration Line to see if an underwriter can turn the decision around into an approval.
- Phone #: 1 (800) 567-1083

What I Do BEFORE Applying For an Amex Card…
1. USE EXISTING Amex cards regularly.
2. LOOK AT current balances. If any are high, pay them off.
3. COUNT current cards. If at a limit (e.g. 4/5 credit cards), then close 1 card. Don’t transfer the line to another card.
4. COUNT current limits. If total lines are getting really large, request a credit-limit decrease (or close a card).
5. MAKE SURE you’re in compliance with 1/5 and 2/90 Rules.
7. CHECK if you’ve had the card before. If yes, check for ‘lifetime language.’
7. APPLY!
