Real learning from this study:
-after each race: measured oxygen & RQ [respiratory quotient]
-to measure carb & fat oxidation
"The more sprints they did, the higher fat oxidation went up!"
-VO2 max was 86%
-but, text books say: at 85% VO2 max
will burn no fat
-this was highest fat oxidation in
history at the very point they were
not supposed to be burning fat!

Shows that muscle glycogen has no obligatory role during
exercise--even at these extremely high intensities...
Look at original studies, Scandinavia, 1967, claiming that there
is an obligatory role for muscle glycogen...
-at point of exhaustion, all had low
muscle glycogen, blood glucose level
was incredibly low

Scandinavian studies...
-at point of exhaustion:
-high carb; mixed carb; low carb athletes
-big differences in muscle glycogen; fat oxidation; carb oxidation
[which doesn't fit the model]
Not different?
-blood glucose concentration
"This was the LIMITING FACTOR"

More studies showed:
-take high carbs during or before exercise:
you sub a bit more carb for a bit less fat
-the kilojoules are absolutely MATCHED, so
"If burn extra 8kj/min of carbs;
you burn 8kj/min of fat less

We have been told, since sports drink
industry got involved [1980s]...
They said: that is the difference!
you burn extra carbs during race that makes you perform better
"But, how does burning 8kj/min carbs
[only 15% of energy] so special?
-you can make that up burning fat
-it is now proven that you CAN
-but, in this case, all groups were
hypoglycemic
-it is blood glucose that is obligatory
fuel, not muscle glycogen

What this shows us, with new measurement understanding...
-body can adapt from carb-reliance toward fat-reliance
AT ALL INTENSITIES OF EXERCISE
-was believed [and promoted by sports drink funds] that
above certain threshold [85% VO2max]
you have to run on carbs
