Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau led a standing ovation for 98-year-old war veteran Yaroslav Hunka in the Canadian Parliament. Hunka, recognized as a "Ukrainian hero" by Speaker Anthony Rota, served in the controversial 14th Waffen Grenadier Division of the SS during World War II. The move sparked controversy and demands for an apology from a Jewish human rights group due to the division's alleged wartime atrocities. Opposition leader Pierre Poilievre also held Prime Minister Trudeau accountable. Trudeau's office clarified that the invitation was made independently by the speaker's office.

Yaroslav Hunka was not just “linked” to the Nazis, he was literally part of the German-Nazi military serving as a Waffen-SS soldier. This group was declared a criminal organization by the International Military Tribunal in Nuremberg in 1946
