Friends Billy the Kid and Doc Holliday flee to the latter's ranch when Pat Garrett starts chasing them. On the ranch lives Rio, Doc's lascivious Mexican girlfriend. Billy and Rio are attracted to each other and get married in secret. However, soon both Doc and more are fighting each other in the middle of the desert, with Garrett hot on their heels.

The Outlaw is one of the most controversial films in Hollywood history and one of the most famous and infamous westerns, in the same vein as Duel in the Sun. All the fuss focuses on Jane Russell. Discovered by Hughes, Jane had perhaps the biggest promotional campaign ever made around a premiere in the history of cinema. One of the advertisements asked "what are the two reasons for Jane Russell to become a star?", an allusion to the actress's large breasts, which Hughes made even larger by having artificial bras made. Furthermore, Hughes filmed her in scenes of high erotic voltage for the time, such as the one in which the actress lies naked next to the feverish hero to warm him up. In addition to Jane Russell, Jack Buetel (credited as Jack Beutel) was also making his screen debut. However, while Jane managed to get rid of the character by moving on to comedies and becoming a big star in the following decade, Buetel did not have the same luck: after four other expressionless westerns, he participated in some television series and, finally, abandoned his career. in 1961.
