In the spring of 1918, during the First World War, Sweden is a neutral country and Swedish Madeleine is the owner of a haute couture clothing store in Stockholm, who frequently travels to Paris where she buys the dresses she sells. She is secretly a spy for German Intelligence who carries information hidden in the dresses she wears about the movement of French troops. Her constant travels attract the suspicion of both French and English spies and the Germans themselves. Meanwhile, Captain Von Marwitz, a deserter from the German Naval Force, arrives in the Swedish capital, who appears to have a lot of money and courts several women (including the Brazilian socialite Lupita), until he approaches Madeleine and the two fall in love. When some of the information Madeleine gave to the Germans turns out to be wrong and one of her employees turns up dead, the spies become suspicious and her life hangs in the balance.
