Twenty years after Alice Barlow's murder, her house is finally occupied again. However, the husband of the couple who moved in has a secret that he will do anything to keep hidden.

📚 The film is based on the original play by Patrick Hamilton's Gas Light (1938) - which was remade in 1944. Encouraged by the success of the play and film, MGM purchased the remake rights, but with a clause requiring all Existing copies of Dickinson's version were destroyed, even to the point of trying to destroy the negative, lest it compete with its more widely publicized 1944 remake starring Charles Boyer, Ingrid Bergman and Joseph Cotten.

This 1940 film version adheres more closely to the original play on which it is based - Patrick Hamilton's Gas Light (1938) - than MGM's 1944 remake. The play was performed on Broadway as Angel Street, so when the MGM remake was released in the United States, it was given the same title as the American stage production.

The psychological term gaslighting, which describes a form of psychological abuse in which the victim is gradually manipulated into doubting their own reality, originated from the play and its two film adaptations. Gaslighting means manipulating others to make them doubt and question their own memory and judgment. (https://en.wikipedia.org/)
