It was adapted for film by Marjorie Deans and Anatole de Grunwald, based on the 1905 play Major Barbara by George Bernard Shaw. It was a critical and financial success. Major Barbara was filmed in London during The Blitz bombing raid of 1940. During the air raids, the crew and cast had to repeatedly duck into air-raid shelters.
