NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, who was in New York for the 78th United Nations General Assembly, made striking statements at a panel organised by the Council on Foreign Relations, one of the leading think tanks. Stoltenberg emphasised that North America and the European region are facing global threats around the world, and discussed NATO's steps and future strategies in this context.
The most striking of Stoltenberg's statements was about the importance of the war in Ukraine for the allies. "If the United States is concerned about China, it must ensure that Russian President Vladimir Putin does not win the war in Ukraine," Stoltenberg said, stressing that if Ukraine wins the war, NATO will have the second largest army in Europe and that European countries' increased defence spending will alleviate concerns about China.
The NATO Secretary General stated that Ukraine's victory is in the interests of the United States and that this will strengthen the US capacity to deal with China.
Stoltenberg also stated that North America and the European region are facing global threats, so NATO is building partnerships with countries such as Australia, New Zealand and Japan, but this does not mean that the Alliance will expand there.
Stoltenberg said, "NATO will remain a regional alliance. This means that NATO will remain a North American and European alliance. If there will be an expansion, it will be with European countries. NATO will not be a global collective defence organisation."
