The 2023 Tokyo Game Show is currently going on and Hyperkin Japan has teased something very interesting that the amazing Muramasa Entertainment shared on Twitter/X. It appears that Hyperkin is developing an FPGA-based clone hardware solution as they had it on display at TGS 2023. Is the Retron FPGA a MiSTer competitor?

Translation from the original Post on X:
Also on display as a reference exhibit is the Hyperkin retro console series, ``RETRON FPGA,'' which has a world-class cumulative shipment volume. Please experience the next generation retro console that uses FPGA technology, which is not emulation technology but is still rare in the Japanese game market. #TGS2023 #hyperkin

So what does it mean and what is a MiSTer anyways? The MiSTer is an open-source piece of hardware designed to emulate and recreate the performance of classic home and arcade video game systems. MiSTer runs on an FPGA, or Field Programmable Gate Array, basically, a technology that can be programed to accurately recreate the look and performance of older integrated circuits in an accurate way that also adds features such as HDMI outputs, video upscaling, scanlines, and more.

FPGAs are considered to be some of the highest quality performers when it comes to recreating old hardware in the video game space. Systems such as the Retro USB AVS and the Analogue NT use FPGAs to deliver fantastic results.

In the end, how much of deal is it that Hyperkin is getting into the FPGA arena? Will you purchase one? What systems are you hoping to run on something like this? And what other TGS 2023 announcements from the Tokyo Games Show are you most interested in? Let me know in the comments!
