Low Carb Denver podcast

Dr Nadir Ali, cardiologist: with heart patient & statins...
-in secondary prevention [already had stint, bypass surgery, or
had myocardial infarction]
-best trial of statins was Forest: 1994, Scandinavia,
-funded & managed by Merck
Results: degree of benefit [mortality risk]
-in statin group v control:
saved 0.6% lives per year
-99.4% had no benefit
"in my opinion, very small improvement"
-brings increased risk of myopathy &
worsening of diabetes, ED"

Dr David Diamond researched this sub-group that benefited
from statins: they were severely insulin resistant
-had high TG & low HDL--only group who benefitted!
"When I consider a drug that a patient will take for 20+ years...
I want to explain degree of benefit
in absolute risk reduction
[NOT RELATIVE RISK,
which exaggerates the benefit]
Patient decides on drug or on lifestyle
changes: fasting, nutrition, exercise"
Many patients decide statin benefits
-are not what they had thought
