Nine million people in the United States live near an abandoned oil and gas well. Because these wells have no owner and were never sealed, they are spewing quantities of methane and other dangerous gases into the atmosphere. Some are over 150 years old and have been lost to the passage of time. As a result, identifying and plugging them with cement can be prohibitively expensive for most jurisdictions. However, with $4.7 billion in funding for this problem included in the Infrastructure Bill, there is renewed optimism. We follow an ex-oil executive and his staff as they locate and plug abandoned oil wells.
