#161 Continuous Liquid Interface Production (CLIP)
Continuous Liquid Interface Production (CLIP) is a 3D printing technology developed by Carbon3D, a California-based 3D printing company. CLIP is designed to significantly speed up the 3D printing process compared to traditional layer-by-layer techniques, such as fused deposition modeling (FDM) or stereolithography (SLA).
Here's how CLIP works:
Resin Pool: In CLIP, a liquid resin pool (typically a photosensitive polymer) is used as the printing material. The resin is contained in a transparent container.
UV Light Projection: A build platform is immersed in the resin pool, and above it, there is a window that allows light to pass through. A digital light projector (DLP) or other light source projects an image of the 3D object's cross-section onto the surface of the resin.
Oxygen Inhibition: The key innovation of CLIP is the use of oxygen to control the solidification process. Oxygen is selectively introduced into the resin pool, creating a thin, liquid layer of uncured resin between the solidified part and the window. This prevents the part from sticking to the window or the build platform.
Continuous Process: Unlike traditional 3D printing, which creates objects layer by layer, CLIP works continuously. The build platform rises slowly as the object is pulled from the resin pool. The continuous process allows for much faster printing speeds since there is no need to pause after each layer.
Final Curing: Once the object is fully printed, it is typically removed from the resin pool and subjected to additional post-processing steps, such as washing and UV curing, to ensure its structural integrity and desired mechanical properties.
The advantages of CLIP technology include faster printing speeds, smoother surface finishes, and the ability to create complex geometries with intricate details. It is particularly well-suited for producing functional prototypes, custom medical devices, and high-performance components.
