"Discussion on Warm-Heat Diseases" by the Qing Dynasty physician Wu Tang.
Chapter 2: Upper Jiao Section (Sections 54 to 58).
Part 11: Autumn Dryness.
54. In autumn, it is easy for people to feel dryness, and the right pulse beats frequently. If the Taiyin Qi in the hand is damaged, Sang Xing Tang (Mulberry and Apricot Decoction) can be used for treatment. It has been said by predecessors that among the six seasons, only dryness seems not to induce illnesses. However, this is not entirely true because the "Nei Jing" (Inner Canon) mentions that in late autumn, one is susceptible to the influence of dryness. Therefore, this perspective emerged. For instance, in the years governed by Yang Ming's celestial energy, diseases caused by dry metal climate can indeed occur. In summary, during the spring and autumn seasons, the temperature is relatively mild compared to summer and winter, and diseases mainly arise from external climatic factors rather than inherent bodily issues. Dryness conditions originating within the body initially manifest in the Lung Wei Meridian, so Sang Xing Tang is needed to clear the internal dryness. The formula for Sang Xing Tang consists of cooling and pungent herbs, including: one qian of mulberry leaves, one qian and five fen of apricot kernels, two qian of sandy soil ginseng, one qian of elephant's trunk shell, one qian of hyacinth bean, one qian of gardenia peel, and one qian of pear peel. Boil these herbs in water, take one cup, and consume it at once. If the symptoms are severe, it can be taken once more. It is important to note that mild drugs should not be taken repeatedly, as excessive use may worsen the condition. If further doses are required, prepare another three cups, as the fragrance of the herbs will gradually diminish.
