Prince: A Musical History
Prince Rogers Nelson (June 7, 1958 – April 21, 2016), known professionally as Prince or The Artist, Formerly Known As Prince, was an American singer-songwriter, musician, record producer, and actor. Widely regarded as one of the most excellent musicians of his generation, Prince was known for his eclectic mix of musical genres, including funk, soul, rock, R&B, disco, pop, jazz, and new wave. He was also a prolific songwriter, having written and produced hits for himself and other artists.
Prince was born and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He began playing piano at seven and taught himself how to play guitar and drums by the time he was a teenager. He signed a record deal with Warner Bros. Records at 19 and released his debut album, For You, in 1978. Over the next few years, Prince released a string of critically acclaimed albums, including Dirty Mind (1980), Controversy (1981), and 1999 (1982).
1984, Prince released his sixth album, Purple Rain, a commercial and critical success. The album reached number one on the Billboard 200 chart and spawned several hit singles, including "When Doves Cry," "Let's Go Crazy," and "Purple Rain." The album's accompanying film, Purple Rain, was a box-office success and helped cement Prince's status as a superstar.
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Prince continued to release successful albums, including Sign o' the Times (1987), Diamonds and Pearls (1991), and The Gold Experience (1995). He also embarked on several successful tours and won numerous awards, including seven Grammy Awards.
In the early 2000s, Prince became involved in a dispute with his record label, Warner Bros. He changed his name to The Artist, Formerly Known As Prince, and began releasing music independently. He also became more outspoken about his religious beliefs and opposition to the music industry.
2004, Prince was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He continued to release music and tour throughout the 2010s. 2016, he died at his Paisley Park estate in Chanhassen, Minnesota. The cause of death was an accidental overdose of fentanyl.
Prince left a legacy as one of his generation's most innovative and influential musicians. His music continues to inspire and influence artists of all genres. He is remembered for his eclectic musical style, powerful vocals, and dynamic stage presence.
