F-Zero 99 (Switch) - Team Battle Event Races #1

It has finally happened! F-Zero is finally on Switch! In last Thursday's Nintendo Direct, Nintendo announced the glorious return of the long-dormant futuristic racing series, in the form of a new 99-player Battle Royale! First there was Tetris 99, then there was Super Mario Bros. 35, then there was Pac-Man 99, and now, say hello to the newest entry in the Nintendo Switch battle royale family, F-Zero 99!

Like Super Mario Bros. 35 before it, F-Zero 99 is basically the entirety of the original F-Zero on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System but with 99 players racing at once! With this also comes some new mechanics, some taken from F-Zero X on the Nintendo 64 (notably the Spin Attack, and the system of boosts consuming your energy), and also the brand-new Skyway mechanic. When cars spin-attack each other, they leave golden sparks on the road that you can collect. Collecting them fills up your Super Boost meter. Once the meter is full, you can activate a Super Boost that will take you onto the transparent Skyway above the track. The Skyway allows you to bypass all the bumper cars on the main track, has additional dash plates on top of your regular boost, and can even cut across some corners on the main track, so it pays to strategize where to best use your Super Boosts.

Another mechanic returning from F-Zero X is the Rival system, which is where four players close to you in skill level (or current rank in the case of Grand Prix or Mini Prix events) are assigned as rivals. Finishing the race ahead of your rivals will boost your rank meter, which works similarly to Splatoon. The meter goes up toward the next rank more the more rivals you beat. But if you don't beat any, the meter goes down. Fill the meter up all the way to reach the next rank. Also like Splatoon, the ranks start at C- and go up to S+, although there is also an S- rank.

There are several ways to race. There is the regular F-Zero 99 race where you race 98 other players on a single race, there is Team Battle where the 99 players are split into two teams trying to score the most points based on attacks, KOs, and position, there is Pro Tracks where you play on the more difficult tracks in the game, there is the Mini Prix event which is a random three-race series with a ranking point system similar to F-Zero X, and there is the Grand Prix, which is a 5-race series based on the leagues of the OG F-Zero (currently only the Knight League is available, though the Queen and King Leagues will be added later).

Today I'm covering my first Team Battle races. In Team Battle, the 99 racers are divided into two teams: the Green Team and the Pink Team. Here, finishing in 1st place is only part of the battle. There are four different ways to score for your team in this mode. You score Spin Points by simply hitting players on the enemy team with your Spin Attack. You score KO Points by delivering the killing blow on an enemy player (the max energy bonus from KOs applies to all members of your team in this mode). You score Bumper Points by getting a Lucky Bumper after getting KO'd and bumping into enemy racers (so you can still help your team from the grave). You score Lap Points depending on your current position at the end of each lap (obviously the higher your position the more points you score). After the race, the total scores in all four categories for each team are added together, and the team with the highest combined score is the winner.
