Dazaifu Tenmangu (太宰府天満宮) is a Shinto shrine located in Dazaifu, a city in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. It is one of the most important and popular shrines dedicated to Tenjin, the deified spirit of Sugawara no Michizane, a scholar and politician of the Heian period in Japan.Sugawara no Michizane is revered as the patron deity of scholarship and learning. He was exiled to Dazaifu in 901 and died there in 903. After his death, he was believed to bring calamity upon the government that had exiled him.

As a result, the government appeased his spirit by renaming him Tenjin, or "heavenly deity," and building a shrine dedicated to him in Dazaifu. Dazaifu Tenmangu was established in 919 and has since become a place of worship and pilgrimage for students, scholars, and academics seeking blessings and success in their studies and examinations. It is particularly popular among students preparing for entrance exams, including the important university entrance exams in Japan.The shrine complex features several buildings, including the main hall, a treasure house, and a beautiful garden. The main hall is adorned with intricate woodwork and houses the enshrined spirit of Sugawara no Michizane.

The garden, known as the "Plum Orchard Garden," is famous for its plum blossoms and is particularly stunning during the plum blossom season in late winter to early spring.Dazaifu Tenmangu attracts millions of visitors each year, including both locals and tourists.
