Foley catheter procedure for female bladder drainage - 3D animation

This animation shows how a routine medical procedure facilitates direct drainage of a female's urinary bladder. A urinary catheter, also known as a Foley catheter, is a small, flexible tube that can be inserted through the urethra, a tube that carries urine from the bladder allowing urine to drain out of the body.

Catheters may be inserted as an in-and-out procedure for immediate drainage, left in with a self-retaining device for short-term drainage (as during surgery), or left indwelling for long-term drainage in patients with chronic urinary retention.

An indwelling Foley catheter remains in place continuously as shown in the video. It keeps the catheter from slipping out by having a balloon on one end that is inflated with sterile water after that end is inside the bladder.
