Update: Gonzalo Lira, age 55, Passed away on 1/24/24, of pneumonia while in custody according to The Ukrainian Government. In a video made by Gonzalo before he attempted to escape Ukraine, he stated that his life was in danger if he was captured. He said he would not survive the torture and would be killed. Despite pleas for his release from his family, The US State Department, headed by Victoria Nuland did nothing to come to the aid of this American Citizen.
Gonzalo Lira (born February 29, 1968) is an American novelist and filmmaker born in Burbank, California. He is the son of Gonzalo Lira Valdés and María Isabel López Hess and is a descendant of José Miguel Carrera, He grew up in the San Fernando Valley, New York City, and Miami, as well as Guayaquil, Ecuador. He completed high school at St. George’s College in Santiago, Chile, in 1985. He attended Dartmouth College in 1991, graduating with honors in 1995, with a degree in history and philosophy. Gonzalo has a large following on YouTube and was living in Kharkov, Ukraine, before his arrest. His wife is Ukrainian and they have 2 children. He gained popularity from his no-nonsense and straightforward approach to many topics.

Chilean-American blogger Gonzalo Lira, who was arrested by Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) in April for 'pro-Russian sympathies has reportedly been re-arrested as he was trying to make his way out of Ukraine into Hungary. His crime?: publishing YouTube videos critical of the war and the US-Kiev-NATO stance.
