Many residential areas were wiped out. Dozens of buildings were swept away by the flood and two dams collapsed causing widespread destruction. Officials say 2,000 people have been confirmed dead.
More than 10,000 deaths are expected.

The city was declared a disaster
Libya asked for help from the international community.
