The story lines of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and Raiders of the Lost Ark mirror the German archeologist Otto Rahn's incredible adventures in the South of France in the early 1930s.

Rahn concluded that German Christian traditions preserved many elements from its pre-Christian pagan past. He was convinced that the Cathars, the medieval "heretic" Christian sect, held the secret to the Holy Grail.
