8 Foods that Are Actually Damaging Your Kidneys
Have you ever been to the carwash and seen the last powerful spray of water before your car gets a quick blow dry from the water jets? It’s one of the ways our kidneys work.
Our kidneys are responsible for removing toxins from the blood through urine. According to the National Institutes of Health, our kidneys filter over 200 quarts of our blood daily. That’s about 2 gallons of waste per day. Our kidneys don’t just take a break on holidays or weekends, they work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Fortunately, our kidneys are able to wash away these impurities while keeping vital nutrients floating in our blood. Properly functioning internal filters are essential for nourishing and detoxifying our bodies.
So it’s no surprise that anything we eat and drink can have a dramatic effect on our kidneys.
Even if you’re already dealing with kidney problems, it is never too late to make improvements to your diet and lifestyle.
In this video, we’ll look at how our kidneys react when we overconsume 8 different foods and drinks. We've all heard about the benefits of protein, but consuming too much of it can have a negative impact on our health. For instance, consuming a diet high in red meats, which is full of animal proteins, can lead to damage to our kidneys. This is because our kidneys need to metabolize the protein, and when there is a large amount of protein being sent to the kidneys for purification, they simply can't keep up with it. When the kidneys can't eliminate the waste products, acidic residue builds up in the body. Therefore, it is important to consult with your health care provider about the right diet for you. Alcohol can also cause damage to your kidneys, as consuming too much alcohol will cause them to be unable to filter your blood properly. Additionally, excessive alcohol can lead to dehydration, which can cause your cells and organs to not function properly.3. Table salt
Our bodies need sodium to keep fluid balance, especially in the electrolyte system. Too much sodium will cause your kidneys to hold water, and too much salt will also increase protein that is excreted in your urine.
4. Coffee
Millions of people rely on caffeine to help them wake up in the morning. Coffee, tea and soda all contain caffeine, which can kickstart your kidneys. The caffeine also increases blood flow and blood pressure. The caffeine can also cause dehydration, just like salt. Dehydration can result in kidney stones. Health experts suggest limiting your coffee intake to 2 cups per day or 3 cups per day. You may also want to cut back on soda and energy drinks. Cocoa is also a source of caffeine, but you should only consume it moderately flavor your food and beverages.Dairy products are a great source of protein but they should be used sparingly, especially for people with kidney disease. Too much calcium in your urine can cause kidney stones. Your kidneys will not be able to manage protein waste properly and it will build up to an unhealthy amount.
Carbonated beverages are one of the main causes of kidney problems. Drinking sodas or energy drinks that are full of caffeine, sugar and artificial sweeteners may taste great, but they don’t do anything to help your kidneys.
Crop-based products such as strawberries and rice have been exposed to a variety of pesticides and herbicides in recent years.
