Hunter Biden, the son of President Joe Biden, now faces indictment led by special counsel David Weiss in connection with a firearm purchase dating back to 2018.

The charges encompass making false statements on a federal firearms form and the illegal possession of a firearm as a prohibited person.

This development marks a significant shift, particularly after the collapse of his initial plea deal, potentially leading to a high-stakes trial amid his father's 2024 reelection campaign.

While the White House initially hoped for a resolution to Hunter Biden's legal issues through a summer plea deal with Weiss, it unraveled under the scrutiny of a federal judge. Furthermore, House Republicans have initiated an impeachment inquiry against the president, specifically related to Hunter Biden's business dealings.

Hunter Biden's legal woes involving firearms trace back to his purchase of a revolver in October 2018. During the purchase, he falsely declared on a federal form that he neither used nor was addicted to illegal drugs, despite his struggles with crack cocaine addiction. It's important to note that lying on the ATF form and possessing a firearm as a drug user are federal offenses. Hunter Biden had the gun for approximately 11 days in 2018. Prosecutors have previously noted that the statute of limitations for some of these charges is set to expire in October.

Hunter Biden's attorney, Abbe Lowell, had previously suggested that a prior agreement with prosecutors would prevent additional charges, asserting that his client adhered to the conditions of release under that agreement. However, prosecutors maintain that the deal was never finalized.

David Weiss has been leading the investigation into Hunter Biden since late 2018, examining potential charges such as felony tax evasion, illegal foreign lobbying, money laundering, and other matters linked to Hunter Biden's overseas business dealings over the years.
