Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will announce on Thursday that the government in Ottawa is getting rid of the GST (Goods and Services Tax) for the construction of new rental apartment buildings. This news comes from a reliable source within the government who wishes to remain anonymous since these details are not public yet. This change will reduce the expenses for builders, making it cheaper for them to get the necessary materials and labor. It's part of a larger plan that Trudeau will talk about later in the day, focusing on making things more affordable. Alongside Trudeau, Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, Housing Minister Sean Fraser, and Industry Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne will also be present at the announcement in London, Ontario.
This gathering is happening in London, where most of the 158 Liberal MPs have come together for a three-day retreat. They're here to plan their strategy for when Parliament reconvenes next week. Trudeau has emphasized that he wants to listen to what the people in their districts are saying.
According to Halifax MP Andy Fillmore, much of the discussions have revolved around making things more affordable and finding better ways for the Liberals to communicate their efforts in reducing living costs. Climate change was a major topic in the meeting on Wednesday, involving MPs from all over the country. There are two more meetings planned for the national caucus on Thursday.
Recent polls have shown a decline in support for the Liberals, with Canadians believing that the Conservatives might be more effective in dealing with affordability and housing issues.
Quebec MP Steve MacKinnon mentioned that the party is working on stabilizing the housing market due to a significant increase in costs and interest rates, but he also emphasized the need for cooperation from the provinces.
Industry Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne, in response to concerns about inflation, dismissed the notion that the Liberals are reacting too slowly, stating, "It's always a good time to fight."
