The Power of the Crucifix

Date – Thursday, September 14th, 2023 – Our Lady of Las Lajas
1. In 1754, Maria Mueses de Quiñones, an Indian woman from Colombia, sought refuge in a grotto called Las Lajas during a storm. There were rumors that the grotto was haunted.
2. Maria's deaf-mute daughter, Rosa, suddenly spoke and exclaimed that she saw a woman with a boy in her arms and two other children by her side in the grotto.
3. This event shocked the community, and although some were skeptical at first, the news began to spread.
4. A few days later, Rosa disappeared from her home and was found playing affectionately with a noble Lady and a Child in the grotto. Maria identified them as the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Divine Infant.
5. Rosa later fell gravely ill and died. Her mother, Maria, carried her body to the grotto, begging the Virgin for help. Our Lady performed a miracle, and Rosa was resurrected.
6. The news of these events drew a crowd, including priests and distinguished individuals, to the grotto. There, they saw a magnificent image of the Blessed Virgin Mary on the rock face, holding her Infant Son, with Saints Dominic and Francis kneeling at their feet.
7. The image was miraculous because it was not painted but mysteriously imprinted in the rock. German geologists confirmed that there was no paint or pigment on the surface; the colors were the natural colors of the rock itself.
8. In 1952, Pope Pius XII granted a canonical crowning of Our Lady of Las Lajas, and in 1954, a gothic church was erected to house the image, which was dedicated as a minor basilica.
9. The image of Our Lady of Las Lajas is unique and reflects both majesty and maternity. Our Lady is depicted with a serious, probing gaze, while the Divine Infant is amiable and turned toward supplicants.
10. The image's physical aspect reflects Latin American characteristics and virtues, with an expression of kindness, stability, and motherhood. Our Lady's long, beautiful hair and regal attire add to her majesty.
Our Lady of Las Lajas, pray for us!
