Let's Go Clamming! Fun and Educational Homeschool Activities for Kids in Massachusetts

Hey everyone! Welcome to our channel. Today, I want to share an exciting and budget-friendly summer activity for families: CLAMMING! This is not only a blast but also an educational field trip option for homeschool kids.

This summer, we got a shellfish license in Barnstable, a town in MA. You can choose the town that suits you, and we found this one to be the most affordable at just $70 for three months. There's also an all-year license option for $140 if that works better for you.

Now, it's important to note that this was our first clamming adventure, and we made a few rookie mistakes, like heading out right at low tide instead of an hour before or not having the right equipment. So, here are some quick tips: plan to arrive an hour before low tide to maximize your clam-digging time. If you're into mussels and quahogs, invest in small hand rakes with long teeth (not the one my husband used in the video). Trust us; they'll save you a lot of effort. In fact, we ended up buying the smaller ones for our next trips, and they were totally worth it!

Now, the blue clam gun that Kiwie was using is for razor clams, but I wouldn't recommend it as it can harm them while you're digging in the sand. If you're after razor clams, a saltwater bottle is your best bet. 😄

If you want to know more about this activity, feel free to ask, and I'll be happy to share more tips! Happy clamming!
