On November 29, 2018, Elisa Thompson, who was 26 at the time, was reported missing after failing to pick up her child from school. During her lunch break, coworkers saw a man approach Thompson as she sat in her car, and they then reportedly drove off together. The following night, November 30, 2018, Thompson's body was discovered in the trunk of her abandoned car that had been parked in the 2800 block of Sharer Road. According to investigators, she was fatally stabbed.

Reginald Gibson, who was 31 at the time, was detained and accused of killing Thompson. Investigators reportedly spoke with an ex-girlfriend of Gibson's who employed Thompson at the same call center, according to arrest records. Just two days earlier, the ex-girlfriend claimed that Gibson had kidnapped her at knifepoint as she arrived to pick up her child from daycare. She claimed that Gibson had driven her to his house and had then held her there against her will for three hours until a roommate returned from work.
