Wimpole Folly

Wimpole Castle may look like a real medieval castle ruin, but it holds a fascinating secret – it's actually a "folly," a charming garden decoration designed to evoke the allure of Gothic ruins.

Back in 1751, the visionary Philip Yorke, 1st Earl of Hardwicke, who owned Wimpole Hall, had a brilliant idea. He commissioned the renowned follies architect of that time, Sanderson Miller, to craft this remarkable folly, mirroring the grandeur of a ruined Gothic castle.

In 1769 it was finally built by the renowned English landscape architect, Capability Brown. Positioned atop a hill, it offers a splendid view of Wimpole Hall, creating a captivating vista for visitors.

At present the Wimpole Estate is now under the caring stewardship of the National Trust, preserving this historic gem for all to explore.
