In this lecture, we will review Sleep Disorders & Bedtime Strategies for Children.

The American Psychiatric Association defines sleep disorders, also called sleep-wake disorders, as problems with sleep quality, timing, and duration. Living with a sleep disorder leads to distress and reduced ability to function.

Some Common Types of Sleep Disorders include: obstructive sleep apnea; Sleepwalking; Confusional Arousals; Sleep terrors; Nightmares; Behavioral Insomnia of Childhood; Delayed Sleep Phase Disorder; Restless leg syndrome.

Insomnia is one of the most common sleep disorders and affects 20% to 30% of children. The primary symptoms are trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or both (Vyas, 2023).

We will review Sleep Strategies for getting a better night’s sleep.
