Sandra Pereira is a Portuguese Communist Party member and Member of the European Parliament (MEP).

"Madam President, on June 7th, Dr. Josef Skála, a militant historian of the Communist Party of Bohemia and Moravia, a well-known personality in the Czech Republic, was sentenced to an 8-month prison sentence, conditionally suspended for 18 months, apparently for having expressed himself in a radio program based on various studies and historical reports about the Katyn massacre, calling into question the version propagated by Joseph Goebbels, Nazi Minister of Propaganda.

Dr. Josef Skála was accused and convicted without any legal basis for his conviction, after a trial where the most basic rights of defense were not guaranteed and in clear violation of the Constitution of the Czech Republic, as was denounced in his country.

His conviction constitutes a disregard for rights, freedoms and democratic guarantees, which exposes the attempt to review and falsify History to impose a single thought.

We express our solidarity with Dr. Josef Skála and join with all those in the Czech Republic and around the world who have denounced this political persecution and demand justice."
