When dogs are in their homes with their owners, they are emboldened to perform behaviors they typically wouldn’t. We see the dog’s most authentic behavior in the behaviors that they consistently perform. When your dog is avoiding people and hiding out in public and other spaces, but charging at guests when they come to your home, that typically means your dog is actually fearful. We talk a lot about aggression being a symptom of another problem, and this ties into what we mean by that. Just because in one setting your dog performs aggressive behaviors doesn’t mean that they are inherently aggressive. They feel secure enough in the spaces they feel they have enough power to act more intensely towards the things they don’t like. But at the core, there is a real issue that needs to be addressed with your dog, and that typically reveals itself in the way they behave most frequently.
