*Moon Landscape*
Located in the heart of the Namib Desert, about 38 minutes drive from Swokopmund and just over 1hr from Walvis bay, the moon landing resembles the lunar surface.
It has vast stretches of undulating sand dunes, rugged rock formations, and stark, barren terrain.
It’s also one of the most famous attractions in Namibia.
*The Desert Itself*
The Namib desert only receives 2 - 5 ml of water each year, making it one of the driest deserts in the world.
One of the main sources of water that the scarce vegetation receives for most of the year comes from the breeze carried from the sea.
Namib means “vast” or "an area where there is nothing" in the local Nama language.
It is home to over 3500 species of plants and the region also boasts some of the world's most magnificent desert scenery.
Not to mention its unusual animals, including desert lions, wild desert horses and oryx
Near the Namib-Naukluft National Park, the Goanikontes Oasis has a series of natural springs that emerge from the desert's underground aquifers.
These springs provide a reliable source of water, therefore, you can see many green trees here.
The name "Goanikontes" is derived from the Nama language and translates to "place of water."
It has been a vital water source for indigenous communities and early European settlers in the region.
There are accommodations available at the oasis, ranging from campsites for travelers with their own camping gear to more comfortable lodges and guesthouses for those looking for a more comfortable stay.
It’s also a good base to explore nearby activities, like the famous dune 45, the moon landing scape itself and other interesting things.
The desert within Dorob National Park isn't the barren wasteland one might imagine. It's home to a wide array of wildlife. The Namib Desert beetle, has inbuilt ingenious mechanisms to extract water from the morning fog, surviving in one of the driest places on Earth. In the rocky outcrops and canyons, you'll find desert-adapted mammals like oryx, springbok, and desert foxes. These creatures have been created with sustenance to withstand the extreme temperatures and limited resources of the desert.
The crown jewel of the desert, however, is the iconic Namib Desert, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that stretches for over 1,200 miles. Its breathtaking vistas include the renowned Sossusvlei, where rust-red dunes rise dramatically against the deep blue sky. The stark beauty of this desert landscape draws photographers and adventure seekers alike.
In this arid wilderness, the wildlife has the ability to survive the harshest of conditions. The elusive desert elephants and black rhinos roam the rocky terrain, while the skies are patrolled by the magnificent martial eagle. Nightfall in the Namib unveils a celestial spectacle, making it a prime location for stargazing.
The region encompassing Walvis Bay, Dorob National Park, and the surrounding desert epitomizes the raw and captivating beauty of Namibia. It showcases the harmonious coexistence of marine life, desert landscapes, and resilient wildlife. This area is a testament to the wonders of our natural world and serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of conservation in preserving these ecosystems for generations to come. Whether you're an intrepid explorer or simply a lover of nature's wonders, this corner of Namibia is an invitation to immerse yourself in the enigmatic beauty of the desert and its remarkable wildlife.
