If you get sick with an E. coli infection, it can really hit hard. Certain strains of it have the potential to wreak havoc.

This week, more than 90 children have been affected by an outbreak across several daycares in Alberta. At least 22 were admitted to hospital.

"It will cause our bodies to, first of all, want to get rid of it. That means a rush of water into your bowels, which then leads to diarrhea," Edmonton-based microbiologist Jason Tetro said.

As Global's health reporter Katherine Ward explains, there are a number of ways an infection can happen, but some simple steps to mitigate the risks.
