PROBED! Generator No. 3 Load Sharing Unbalance in Parallel Operation

Watch until the end and the cause will blow your mind!

24.Aug.2023. Today, the job is to probe why Generator No. 3 (DG3) is showing PMS alarm "Gen Admin 2: ActUnbalLoad" in the IAS. In parallel operation, load sharing of DG3 with any other synchronized generators are unbalance. The former cannot get equal load with the latter and as a result, Gen Admin 2 Alarm registers in the Integrated Automation System (IAS).

This PMS situation is not economical because if DG2 (Master) carries 80% load, the next standby (i.e., DG4) will run undesirably. DG3 has still some capacity to give up to 80% (now at 54%) but now cannot take in more load.

Now, if we would focus on the load sharing case: there are two ways to equalize the load sharing:
1. By adjusting the LOAD SENSITIVITY (trim potentiometer) at Load Sharing Module (LSM) found at the back of MSB.
2. By increasing the SPEED (trim potentiometer) at this Electronic Speed Control Unit. In this method, fuel supply is increased by throttling up the electromagnetic governor actuator so that the speed of the engine will increase. When the speed is increased, frequency also goes up (quite plausible since DG3 has only 59.2Hz).

But before doing so, let us think out of the box and PROBE WHY there is a HUGE voltage drop in DG3 Control System that more than meets the eye.

Watch until the end and the cause will blow your mind!
