A study published in the Journal of Cannabis Research compared legal and illegal cannabis samples in Canada and found that illegal cannabis contained an average of 3.7 different pesticides. Researchers tested the samples for traces of 327 different pesticides and discovered that many illegal cannabis samples contained harmful chemicals, with one illegal sample containing nine pesticide ingredients. In contrast, only 6% of the licensed samples tested positive for pesticides. The study highlights the safety differences between legal and illegal cannabis products in Canada.

This finding underscores the importance of ensuring that cannabis products, whether legal or illegal, are properly tested and free from harmful contaminants. Consumers are encouraged to obtain a certificate of analysis (COA) from cannabis companies to verify that their products have undergone rigorous testing for quality and safety.
