On September 1, Typhoon Saola hit the southern coast of China.
With initial wind speeds of over 200 km/h, Saola was one of the strongest storms to threaten the south of the country since 1949.
On the eve of almost 900 thousand people were evacuated to safe places.
In Hong Kong, authorities have issued the highest level of typhoon alert.
Typhoon Saola made landfall in Zhuhai, Guangdong.
Upon landfall, the typhoon's wind speed slowed to 160 km/h.
Despite this, millions of people in Hong Kong, Shenzhen and other major cities sat at home in fear.
Offices, businesses and educational institutions were closed.
Hundreds of flights have been cancelled.
Public transport, including trains, has also been suspended.
After the passage of the typhoon on the streets of Hong Kong, one could see numerous fallen trees and broken glass.
The wind also tore solar panels off the roofs of buildings.
One person died in Shenzhen after a tree fell on a car.
Despite the weakening, Saola continues to influence the region.
The typhoon is forecast to head out to sea.
Climate change has increased the intensity of tropical storms, experts say. #Typhoon #storm #climatechange #climate
