An annular solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Sun and the Earth, but is just far away enough in its orbit that the Sun is not completely covered—creating a large, bright ring in the sky.

On October 14, 2023, an "annular" or "ring of fire" solar eclipse is scheduled to journey from the Oregon coastline to the Gulf of Mexico. Assuming favorable weather conditions, the majority of the Americas will have the opportunity to witness at least a partial solar eclipse.
