When Reporting on Robbery Becomes a Robbery: Only in Chicago

In the poetic justice department of "you can't make this stuff up," a Chicago TV news crew got a firsthand taste of the city's crime problem. While out filming a piece on—you guessed it—robberies, the crew from Spanish language station Univision Chicago was held up at gunpoint by three masked men and relieved of their camera and personal belongings. Ah, the sweet smell of Progressive progress under Mayor Brandon Johnson! You know, it's like Chicago is so ahead of the curve that even crime has become meta. But, hey, let's not fault the criminals too much—they're just erasing the evidence. Clearly, crime has reached the point where the wrong lens at the wrong place and the wrong time might as well be a neon sign that says "rob me." And if you're looking for solutions, well, good luck getting those from politicians who've been bending over backward to be soft on crime.

Why not give the crew bulletproof vests and small arms training next time? What's next? Security teams escorting news crews? Might as well, given that this isn't the first time a news crew was targeted this month. It's hard to keep the public informed when the people doing the informing are also on the robbers' target list. If this isn't a wake-up call for Chicago—and any other city soft-pedaling its approach to crime—I don't know what is.
