As bow season approaches (PS good luck! Damn, how do youse get close enough?), elk are the trending topic. What have you heard? What have you seen? Except for a large herd on a far slope across the line of the flanking Custer National Forest, that's usually zip.
This large group came down to feed on the second-growth alfalfa bonanza, likely reassured by the weird early darkness due to the usual Labor Day rain and perhaps the worst wildfire smoke haze of the year. And even though those faint blurs could be refrigerators for all it shows, this helps document their presence as well as my recall when asked.
Note: I crept back with binoculars to confirm ID. Saw what appeared to be a darker, larger beast I would have to testify was a large bull. Began raining again; little to no breeze. Could make out a couple heads swing in my direction but was routine herd scan else they'd have bailed faster than the rather casual graze-walk away to the SE. All had vanished from my visuals less than 10 minutes later on recheck.
