Harland Sanders was born in Henryville, Indiana, in 1890. At the age of six, his father died, and he was forced to drop out of school in order to work and support his family. He began his working life as a farmhand, and later held a variety of jobs, including: railroad fireman, insurance salesman, and electrician. It was during his time as a salesman that he began to develop his now-famous chicken recipe.

In 1930, Sanders opened his first restaurant in Corbin, Kentucky. He called it "Sanders Court & Café," and it quickly became a local favorite. Sanders became known for his "finger-lickin' good" chicken, and word of his restaurant began to spread. In 1939, he was given the title of "Kentucky Colonel" by the governor of Kentucky.

In 1952, Sanders began franchising his restaurant, and it soon became a nationwide phenomenon. By the time Sanders sold the company in 1964, there were more than 600 KFC franchises in the United States. Sanders himself became a well-known figure, appearing in television commercials and becoming the face of the brand.
