Edward Bernays, nephew of Sigmund Freud, is the father of public relations. Everything you've come to assume and hate about advertising and propaganda today stems back to this guy. Writing from the 1930s, Bernays is a great example of the self-conscious desire, on the part of the emerging PMC at the time, to sell itself to the capitalists as the potential representatives, manipulators, and experts of public opinion.
