Date – Tuesday, September 5th, 2023 – St. Laurence Justinian

1. St. Laurence Justinian, born into the Venetian family of the Justinians (Giustiniani), was noted for his seriousness even as a child.

2. At the age of 19, he had a vision of Eternal Wisdom inviting him to unite himself with it, which led him to enter the religious life.

3. St. Laurence Justinian joined the Augustinian Order of the Canons of St. George on Alga Island, near Venice, known for his austerities and humility.

4. After his ordination, he was elected General of his Order and initiated profound reforms, essentially serving as its second founder.

5. In 1433, he was named Bishop of Venice, a position he initially tried to refuse but was obliged by Pope Eugene IV to accept.

6. As Bishop of Venice, St. Laurence Justinian played a pivotal role in resolving state quarrels, founding new monasteries, and improving divine worship in the parishes.

7. In 1450, he was elected Patriarch of Venice, and his ecclesiastical reform in the city is considered a precursor to what St. Charles Borromeo would later do in Milan after the Council of Trent.

8. His books and sermons reflected a deep devotion to the Passion of Our Lord, emphasizing the importance of the Faith.

9. St. Laurence Justinian passed away on January 8, 1455, leaving a lasting legacy of sanctity. He was beatified in 1524 by Pope Clement VII and canonized in 1690 by Pope Alexander VIII.

10. His feast day was established on September 5, the day of his episcopal consecration.

St. Laurence Justinian's life and reforms were emblematic of a period marked by both piety and the growing challenges of the revolutionary spirit within the Church. His commitment to reform and spiritual depth continue to inspire Catholics today.

St. Laurence Justinian, pray for us!
