On February 22, 2022, a BPD officer was attempting to help a driver who was standing in the road near W. Fairview Ave and N. Liberty Street. Witnesses reported to dispatch that the driver was causing a traffic hazard and might need help. Officer Cody Evans responded to the call, and pulled up behind the subject’s vehicle, which was stopped in the left turn lane on Fairview. The driver was standing by the passenger door waving and talking to passing drivers. Shortly after arriving and contacting the subject, Jonathan Manee, Officer Evans changed the call type to Crisis due to the irrational statements Manee was making. Officer Evans attempted to escort Manee out of the roadway for his own safety, at which time Manee resisted, pulled a handgun out of his pocket, and pointed it at Officer Evans. Manee was treated and released from the hospital. He was charged with and convicted by a jury in June, 2023 of Aggravated Assault upon a law enforcement officer with a Deadly Weapon enhancement. On Monday, August 28, 2023, Manee was sentenced to serve up to 25 years in prison with 15 years fixed before being eligible for parole.
