Asphalt, black or brown petroleum-like material that has a consistency varying from viscous liquid to glassy solid. It is obtained either as a residue from the distillation of petroleum or from natural deposits. Asphalt consists of compounds of hydrogen and carbon with minor proportions of nitrogen, sulfur, and oxygen.

Asphalt is made by the fractional distillation of crude petroleum. In order to dry the aggregate (sand-gravel) and obtain sufficient fluidity of the asphalt (usually called asphalt cement or binder), both must be heated prior to mixing to create an asphalt pavement (commonly known as "Black-Top").

Molecular structures of bitumen component (SARA) fractions: (a) asphaltenes (C 50 H 48 O 4 ), (b) aromatics (C 46 H 50 S), (c) saturates (C 20 H 42 ), and (d) resins (C 50 H 80 S).

Asphalt concrete is a combination of two primary ingredients: (i) aggregate and (ii) asphalt cement. Typically, the aggregate constitutes 90–95% (w/w) of the total mixture and the asphalt cement (asphalt binder) constitutes 5–10% (w/w) of the total mixture to form the asphalt concrete.
