The usually quiet loon has a wide variety of sounds to communicate, including their eerie, haunting calls or moans, which are often heard echoing across lakes. They migrate during the mating season, staying with their mate until one of them dies. Loons are good parents sharing the incubating, feeding, and protection of their young. The newborn chicks like to climb on the back of their parents for rides, even falling asleep there.
