Hundreds of women took to the streets in Pakistan’s biggest city, Karachi, on Thursday to protest against soaring electricity prices.

About 1000 women, holding banners and placards with some even burning electricity bills, gathered on one of the main streets of the city in a protest organized by major Islamic party Jamaat-e-Islami.

There have been sporadic protests across the country after consumers received July power bills following a recent increase in electricity prices and taxes, which was a key demand of the International Monetary Fund for revival of a long-stalled financial assistance package.
