Edgin Darvis, a former member of the peacekeeping order known as the Harpers, finds himself imprisoned after the disciples of a Red Wizard he had captured kill his wife. Alongside the barbarian Holga Kilgore, Edgin turns to a life of theft in an attempt to provide for his daughter Kira. During a raid on a Harper stronghold, Edgin and Holga are captured while their accomplices escape. After two years in prison, they escape and learn that their former comrade Forge Fitzwilliam has become Lord of Neverwinter, caring for Kira and blaming Edgin for his own arrest. They plan to rob Forge's vault and bring Kira home during the upcoming High Sun Games, using a Tablet of Reawakening to prove their innocence and resurrect Edgin's wife.
