Doctors pull wriggling 8-centimetre live worm from patient's brain during surgery

A live, wriggling 8-centimetre-long worm was found in an Australian patient's brain during surgery in 2021 and was described by an infectious diseases physician on Tuesday as something doctors "never expected."

"Certainly something we'll never forget," he added.

The findings of the case are published in the September edition of the Emerging Infectious Diseases journal and the authors say the wriggling worm likely came after the woman unknowingly ingested the eggs of a parasitic roundworm often found in pythons in the area.
